Should I Hire A Pro To Remodel My Bathroom?

You may be stuck between hiring someone to remodel your bathroom or pursuing the DIY route. Wages for a handyman range between $50 and $80 per hour. Some may charge a flat fee per project. You may be wondering whether you can remodel your bathroom on your own.

The answer will depend on your confidence in DIY projects and the type of remodeling you are pursuing. If you are going for a new look but don’t need to make any changes to plumbing or replace any drywall, you may be able to renovate your bathroom DIY.

IKEA goods are designed to be easy to put together yourself. They come with extensive instructions, and you can find video guides online about how to assemble specific pieces.

For anyone with experience in DIY home improvement projects, or even someone who is interested in getting their toes wet in DIY, an IKEA bathroom remodeling project would be suitable.

If you are unable to install and assemble the IKEA pieces, you can consider hiring a contractor, a handyman, or even a local teen who is good with their hands—depending on the type of work required.

If you are installing new tiling, you may want to hire a professional, but for tasks such as shelf assembly or hanging a new shower curtain, you can probably find someone locally who can do that for you very cheaply.

Other tasks like replacing drywall damaged from moisture are best left up to professionals.

You may find yourself somewhere between these extremes. Maybe you are not comfortable installing new tiling on your own, but you can paint a wall on your own and assemble some furniture.

In that case, you should complete all that you can DIY, and hire a professional to finish up the parts you can not do on your own.

Can I Remodel My Bathroom If I am A Renter?

While you will not be able to tear down any walls or replace your shower if you are a renter, there are still ways that you can upgrade your bathroom and change up the style.

First, consider changing up your shower curtain. Shower curtains are a big part of the appearance of a bathroom, so buying a new shower curtain can give the room a new look.

You can also purchase new accessories, such as soap dispensers, shelving units, floor rugs, and toilet seat covers. IKEA offers many accessories to choose from, and all of them can be taken with you if you move to a new house or apartment.

You can also add a standing lamp for extra lighting and suction hooks and shelves for extra storage.

For a more extensive renter-friendly remodel, you can purchase vinyl flooring that can be placed over the existing flooring, causing no harm to the flooring underneath. This is a great option if your existing flooring looks dingy and you are willing to invest in a new flooring to cover it.

While it may be disappointing to not be able to remodel your bathroom into the bathroom of your dreams, there is an upside: small-scale remodels are much more affordable, and they can have almost just as large of an impact on the bathroom’s appearance as a full remodel.

How To Save Costs When Remodeling Your Bathroom With IKEA

Our Remodeling Pros share the tips and tricks you can use to shave off a few thousands dollars off the cost of your bathroom remodel.

DIY Remodel

Remodeling your bathroom yourself is the best way to save money. Across the US, labor rates for professional bathroom remodeling pros range from $65-110 per hour, and you can save thousands if you do the work yourself.

If you are not comfortable completing the full project DIY, consider choosing elements to do on your own and hiring a professional for the rest.

For those set on hiring a contractor for the whole project, at least consider removing items off walls and from cabinets before the contractor arrives, as they will charge for having to clear the room.

Don’t Update Plumbing

Changing the plumbing of your bathroom may allow for a more user friendly or better looking bathroom space, but it will be one of the most costly parts of the project.

Typically, moving plumbing in an existing bathroom costs $2,600 – 5,000+ depending on the scope of work. Leaving the plumbing where it is will help keep costs low.

Consider Tile Alternatives

Tile is a difficult flooring material to install. If you want an affordable, easy to install DIY option, consider Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring.

Made from PVC, it is 100% waterproof, and also designed for easy DIY installation. Remodeling a bathroom floor with vinyl costs between $2 to $8 per square foot, whereas tile will cost you between $8 and $20 per square foot.

Only Replace Damaged Drywall

A big part of bathroom remodeling is replacing damaged drywall. Drywall gets damaged from moisture and may have mold growth.

This is most likely the case in the drywall near your shower and toilet. Other drywall, however, may be in fine condition.

Be sure to only replace drywall that is damaged, as replacing all of your drywall is unnecessary and costly.

Avoid Changing Bathroom Size

Knocking down walls and expanding your bathroom is a sure way to incur high costs. Consider other alternatives to making your bathroom feel larger, such as choosing a smaller vanity, using white or very light paint colors, adding larger mirrors.

Can You Use IKEA Kitchen Cabinets For A Bathroom?

While IKEA offers their specialty bathroom cabinet lines Godmorgon and Hemnes lines, some homeowners want a different look.

In fact, its a recent trend in IKEA remodeling that homeowners are very drawn to the look and feel of the IKEA designer kitchen cabinets and would prefer to install them in their bathroom.

Are IKEA Bathroom Cabinets Good Quality?

Both homeowners and contractors that install IKEA Godmorgon bathroom cabinets are very happy with the results and quality of the cabinets and hardware.

Bathroom pros find that you cannot find a bathroom cabinet and hardware of the same quality, usability and longevity in that price range ANYWHERE ELSE.

Depending on the size you select, you will have 2 – 4 fully functional deep drawers. To find similar quality you would be looking to spend at least triple the price.

Interestingly enough, you cannot build the same quality cabinet including hardware DIY at the cost offered by IKEA.

So in terms of cost to value ration the Godmorgon bathroom cabinets are an all around win!

However, when it comes to plumbing there are a few things to keep in mind, if you choose to go for IKEA cabinets:

The cabinets are designed with the IKEA low profile drain system, that is bundled with and IKEA sink top for that cabinet.

If you want to install a different sink, you will have to buy the regular drain components. However, these will interfere with the drawers.

A that point, you will have to spend money to modify the drawers (which is possible), but you lose storage capacity. Moreover, some modifications end-up being unattractive.

On the other hand, the big advantage of this set-up, is that the drain is directed at 90 degrees from the sink to the wall. This way, there is no upper drawer with an odd design, which needs to bypass traditional drains and traps.

Typically, its these kinds of vanities that you find at Lowe’s and Home Depot.

Is An IKEA Bathroom Worth It?

If your goal is to remodel your bathroom under $5,000-7,000 you cannot beat IKEA in terms of economic prices, quality and the wide range of design options.

Doing a bathroom remodel is one of the most popular and lucrative interior remodeling projects with the highest ROI of around 75-80%.

If your property is valued under $500,000 and you are remodeling your bathroom to get the house ready for sale, IKEA is a great choice to get top dollar back for your remodel. A more expensive property will call for higher-end bathroom materials and products that what IKEA offers.
