Is Fiberon Environmentally Friendly?

Fiberon decking makes significant efforts to be environmentally friendly, in their design and production.

Each year, Fiberon re-uses 100 million pounds of plastic in their products each year, preventing them from entering landfills.

They also reuse almost all of the water used in producing their composite decking to reduce water waste. More generally, Fiberon re-uses 98.5% of all the waste from their production process.

If you buy Fiberon decking, rest assured that it is made from environmentally friendly materials and made using an environmentally friendly process.

Pros And Cons Of Fiberon Decking

Here are the main pros and cons to consider before deciding to go for a Fiberon deck:

Pros:

● Durable: Fiberon decking is made from strong, long-lasting materials that do not deteriorate over time.

● Low-maintenance: Fiberon composite decking does not require staining like wood decking, and does not chip, split, or splinter. The only maintenance required is semi-regular cleaning.

● Environmentally friendly: Fiberon decking is made from recycled material using environmentally friendly production methods.

● Fade and stain resistant: Fiberon decking is protected with an anti-fading, anti-stain coating that prevents damage from substances and UV rays.

● Slip-resistant: Fiberon decking has anti-slip coatings, making it is well-suited for placement besides pools or on docks or marinas.

● Splinter-free: If you have young children or prefer being on your porch barefoot, the splinter-free nature of Fiberon decking will prevent injuries so you can use your deck worry-free.

● Range of prices: Fiberon offers composite decking at a range of price points. The Good Life and Sanctuary lines are excellent affordable choices for those seeking budget-friendly composite decking.

Cons:

● Cost: Fiberon decking is more expensive than hardwood decking. Per linear foot, wood decking costs between $4 and $8, whereas Fiberon decking costs between $4.75 and $10.85 per linear foot.

● Limited edging: If you want square edge planks, you will need to purchase 20 foot sections or more, whereas grooved planks are available in smaller sizes.

● Warranties: While Fiberon does have reliable warranties, many of their competitor companies offer better warranties for a similar price point.

● Scratching: Decking in the Good Life series can be prone to scratches and marks.

Where Can I Buy Fiberon Decking?

Many contractors and suppliers carry Fiberon decking, but the selection will vary by location. Another option is to purchase Fiberon decking from Home Depot. Home Depot carries the entire ArmorGuard line. They also carry a selection of other lines such as Concordia, Good Life, Paramount, and more.

How Can I Clean A Fiberon Deck?

A Fiberon deck should be cleaned at least twice a year to remove dirt, debris, organic matter such as leaves, and pollen. You should use a mild cleaner and a non-metal scrub brush.

It is also important to remove leaves and prevent buildup in the fall. Leaves can be easily removed using a broom or a blower.

Much damage to decking occurs because organic matter and water get stuck between the cracks in the decking, especially if the gap is over 3/16 of an inch.

If you notice clogging in the gaps between boards, you should use a hose to remove the blockage or a power washer. If you find mold in your decking, be sure to use a mold remover first before adding water to the cracks, as that can push the mold further down and cause more extensive damage.

Wood Decking vs. Fiberon Decking

You may be considering purchasing real wood decking instead of composite decking like Fiberon. Both have advantages and disadvantages, so the best fit for your new deck will depend largely on your needs.

First and foremost, wood decking is more affordable than Fiberon composite or PVC decking. However, depending on your desired wood type the cost of a hardwood deck might be higher than Fiberon.

Also, if you choose pressure-treated wood, it will be more costly. Fiberon offers some of the most affordable composite decking in the industry in the Good Life line.

Wood decking is frequently preferred over composite decking because of its natural, warm appearance. More expensive Fiberon lines have a range of grain options that mimic real wood, but upon close examination the decking is clearly composite.

Wood decking offers a more changeable look and feel. You can restain your deck into a new color to fit your updated aesthetics, whereas Fiberon decking cannot be restrained or changed without a full replacement.

One major advantage of Fiberon decking is that it does not deteriorate in the way wood decking does. It will not chip, crack, or splinter, and it is much less susceptible to mold or other water damage.

Moreover, Fiberon decking will not require regular repainting or resealing like wood decking does.

Fiberon vs. Trex Decking

Trex decking is another top composite decking provider. Both companies provide similar products, but there are some distinctions that help differentiate the companies. First, both Trex and Fiberon have decent warranties, but Trex decking has slightly superior warranties.

Also, both Trex and Fiberon make their composite decking from almost entirely recycled material. Fiberon also has their own recycling plant that recycles millions pounds of plastic and then uses them in their decking.

Both Trex and Fiberon are roughly equal in terms of performance. Both are durable, resistant to staining and fading, and long-lasting.

If you are looking for other outdoor products in addition to decking, Trex has more options available such as outdoor kitchens and outdoor lighting.

In terms of price points, the companies offer similarly priced products but Fiberon is overall slightly cheaper.

UltraDeck vs Fiberon Decking

UltraDeck provides two lines of composite decking with different color and style options. UltraDeck is made from 100% recycled materials, making it one of the most environmentally friendly decking material in the industry.

Compared to Fiberon, UltraDeck has a somewhat limited range of colors available, with only eight to choose from.

Some of UltraDeck’s models are not protected against staining or fading. Also, some of UltraDeck’s warranties are only ten year limited warranties, whereas Fiberon products come with a minimum of a twenty five year limited warranty.

Fiberon vs. Duralife Deck

Unlike Fiberon products which are made from PVC or WPC, Duralife decking is made from polypropylene (20%), hardwood flour (55%), and recycled wood and plastic (25%).

Duralife offers two main lines with a wide array of color choices, styles, and design profiles. The premium profile is a solid plank, while the more affordable profile is made to be lighter by removing some of the insides of the boards.

While Fiberon uses 95% recycled material and boasts of green production methods, Duralife uses only 90%, one of the lower in the composite decking industry.

Additionally, Fiberon is easily accessible through carriers such as Home Depot, Duralife is not carried by either Home Depot or Lowe’s.

All Duralife products are protected under a twenty five year warranty, whereas some lines of Fiberon decking are covered by a limited lifetime warranty.

Reviews Of Fiberon Decking

Overall, homeowners are satisfied by many features of Fiberon decking. Some customers report impressive lifespans of their Fiberon decks. Others appreciate the simplicity of installing a Fiberon deck, especially if the deck is a DIY project, as well as the seamlessness of the hidden fasteners.

Buyers also value the durability of the decks and report no issues with staining or other damage.

However, some customers have had issues with damage such as staining, warping, or bubbling. Others complain of difficulty filing warranty complaints, as well as other customer service issues.

While some customers do have complaints about Fiberon decking, overall customer reviews are positive and largely reflect the reliability and good reputation of the company.

ROI Of Fiberon Decking

Fiberon Deck

Unfortunately, composite decking tends to have somewhat lower ROI than wood decking. You can expect an average return on investment of about 65%, which is between 10 and 20% less than for a wood deck. The reason is generally assumed that buyers prefer the natural appearance of real wood decking, as well as its versatility.

There are other advantages to composite decking like Fiberon over wood decking, though, so it is important to consider all factors when choosing a new deck, not just the return on investment.

In the long run, many buyers find that composite decking pays off in the long run, as they do not have to pay for regular maintenance like staining.

Composite decking like Fiberon is an excellent choice if you are planning on staying in your home for many years to come and want a deck that will last you.

If you plan on moving in the next few years, and plan to sell you home, a hardwood deck is likely better.
