On average, a 10×20 concrete patio costs around $3,000. Most concrete patios cost between $1,850 and $4,300.

A small 12×12 low-end concrete patio can cost as little as $1,300, while a high-end patio generally starts at over $4,000.

You total cost will vary widely depending on many factors, including patio size, location, property condition, design, and materials used.

You can use our Concrete Cost Calculator to estimate how much it will cost to pour concrete for your patio. This estimate is for a basic patio and will not include the additional pricing for any fancy designs.

Per square foot, a concrete patio costs between $9 and $30+. Labor costs of installing the patio will vary depending on whether the location is rural or urban, how hard it is to access the site, as well as the physical features of the concrete patio.

While there are many factors that influence the price of a concrete patio, size is one of the most important to consider. Large spaces can quickly add up even when choosing a more basic patio option, and if you are working with a small space you may have more monetary freedom to spend on exciting designs and features.

Below is a table with concrete patio costs based on size.

Patio Size in Feet Square Footage Average patio cost
10 x 10 100 $1,200 – $3,000
10 x 12 120 $1,250 – $3,600
12 x 12 144 $1,300 – $4,320
12 x 14 168 $1,512 – $5,040
16 x 18 288 $2,592 – $8,640
20 x 20 400 $3,600 – $12,000

Pro Tip: For projects that are smaller that are 140 feet, the price will not be less, because the labor is the same, and there pretty much just as much concrete. So making a patio very small is not the best way to save money.

Moreover, a contractor will not be able to get a delivery for one yard of concrete. This means that they will need to bring bags of concrete and mix them on site, which makes the job more labor intensive, and therefore actually more expensive.

Concrete Patio Costs by Design

Cost of a concrete patio

Another important aspect that influences pricing significantly is the design of the concrete. One of concrete’s main appeals is that it can be molded, colored, and patterned in almost any design desired. However, the different design options come at different costs.

Cheaper options include broom finished concrete and exposed aggregate concrete, whereas painted or coated concrete and decorative stenciling can be much more expensive.

Basic designs start at $9 per square foot and can go up to as much as $35+ per square foot for stamped and stained concrete that looks like slate or tile.

Below is a table estimating how much you can expect to spend on a concrete patio, depending on the design you choose.

Concrete Patio Design Patio Cost per sq. ft Cost of a 12×12 patio (144 sq.ft.)
Broom Finished Concrete $9 – 10 $1,296 – 1,440
Exposed Aggregate Concrete $9 – 11 $1,296 – 1,584
Engraved Concrete $11 – $13.5 $1,584 – 1,944
Stamped Concrete $15 – 25 $2,160 – 3,600
Stained Concrete $18- 27 $2,529 – 3,888
Painted or Coated Concrete $16 – $28 $2,304 – 4,032
Decorative Stencil Masking $20 – $35 $2,880 – 5,040

There are many factors that influence the cost of the patio, such as design, patio size, and property condition. Below are some of the main factors that commonly increase the cost of concrete patios.

Design: Depending on the design you choose for your concrete patio, the price can vary. Adding different colors, textures, borders, curved edges, or other design features will of course cost more than a basic design with one color and straight edges.

Patio Size: The size of the patio will naturally alter the price, as larger patios will require more materials and labor. Generally speaking, though, contractors lessen the price per square foot as the amount of square feet increases for larger patios. For smaller patios, contractors sometimes charge a minimum total rather than price per square foot.

Patio Shape: If you have or want a patio with complex shapes, curves, or angles, the price will be higher than a simple square or rectangle patio.

Existing Patio Removal: If there is an existing patio that must be removed, that will add to the price. Removing an existing concrete patio, for instance, can cost between $550 and $1,550, in addition to other costs. However, sometimes concrete can be built over the existing material, and may be cheaper than installing an entirely new patio. Resurfacing generally costs between $3 and $10 per square foot, which is less than the cost of removing the patio entirely and starting from scratch.

Property Condition: If the property must be leveled, or demolition and other site work is required, the price of installing the patio will increase. If the property needs special equipment in order to assess it, more costs will be incurred.

How Much Does A Stamped Concrete Patio Cost?

Stamped concrete patios costs between $15 and $25 per square foot, although more complex projects can cost as much as $30 per square foot.

The price varies significantly depending on several factors, including material costs and contractors available in your region, as well as the design and colors you choose.

For a basic, affordable stamped concrete option, choose just one pattern and color. This will cost between $15 and $16 per square foot. For a mid-range option, you can choose multiple colors, borders, and contrasting patterns for $18 – $25 per square foot. A high-end option will let you choose multiple stamp patterns and colors, specialty scored designs, and detailed hand coloring, and will be priced above $28-30 per square foot.

With an estimated patio size of 168 square feet, a basic stamped concrete patio will cost around $2,520, a mid-range patio will cost around $3,360, and a high-end patio will cost around $4,200. Costs will of course vary depending on the exact size of the patio and the contractor’s pricing.

Surface Options for Concrete Patio Flooring

There are various surface design options you can play with to customize the look of your concrete patio.

Stained Concrete Patio

Stained concrete is an affordable and aesthetic patio flooring choice, costing between $18 to $27 per square foot. Stained patio colors come in a wide array of hues, particularly earthy tones, and can include design accents.

With staining, the color sinks deep into the concrete and is fade-resistant. Whereas paint coats will peel and flake away, stained concrete patios maintain their color without much maintenance.

Stained concrete comes in two forms, acid stained and water-based stains. Acid based stains generally come in earthy tones, whereas water-based stains have more of a variety of available hues, including black and metallic hues.

Stamped Concrete Patio

Stamped concrete can take the look of stones such as slate and flagstone, as well as brick, tile, cobblestones, and even wood. Stamped concrete has almost limitless possibilities for color and design.

Many choose designs that blend well with existing stone or tile in the outdoor living space or the outside of the home. For instance, a brick-styled border of a patio might be the perfect fit for a brick house.

While the most common colors are greys and earth tones, rust and reddish hues are also popular. Stamped concrete is an affordable option, costing about $15 to $25 per square foot.

Stenciled Concrete Patio

Stenciled concrete offers unique, nearly unlimited design choices. There are many different ways to stencil concrete, depending on the type of stencil, if the stencil is applied to an overlay or to existing concrete, and also the type of design desired.

Stenciling can be done by etching designs into concrete using gelled acid or sandblasting. Or, to make an embossed pattern, a concrete overlay is troweled or sprayed over the stencil pattern. Color can also be achieved using both water-based and acid-based staining, either before or after the stencil is removed.

The price of stenciled concrete varies widely, between $20 to $35 per square foot depending on the complexity of the stenciling design.

Exposed Aggregate Concrete Patio

Exposed aggregate concrete is one of the cheapest option for patios, ranging in price from $9 to $11 per square foot. Exposed Aggregate concrete is created by placing concrete and them removing the outer layer, uncovering decorative coarse aggregate.

Beautiful aesthetics can be achieved at a low cost because few additional tools and materials are required to make exposed aggregate concrete. There are several options for exposed aggregate, such as granite, quartz, basalts, or limestone, or even colored glass.

Engraved Concrete Patio

New or old concrete can be engraved, making engraving a good choice for those looking to elevate an existing concrete patio. Using special tools, a wide array of designs and shapes are etched into the concrete.

Engraved concrete pairs particularly well with staining to achieve a contrasting, complex look. While the design options are almost endless, the cost remains affordable, between $11 and $13.5 per square foot of engraved concrete.

Painted Concrete Patio

By coloring concrete, almost any look can be achieved. Concrete can be colored into bold hues, or mimic brick, tile, or pavers. Coloring can be done on both new or existing concrete. Painted concrete costs between $16 to $28 per square foot.

Concrete Pavers

Pavers are slabs of concrete in individual pieces, making them a good choice for those looking for the aesthetic of stone without the cost or hassle.

Pavers can come in almost any shape or color, leading to endless design options. Pavers are easy to maintain, because individual pieces can be removed and replaced as needed, rather than requiring larger fixes. While more durable than some options, pavers do cost more, between $10 and $20 per square foot.

Concrete Patio Sealer Cost

Concrete patios do not necessarily have to be sealed, but it is a good idea if you intend to eat on your patio, as food can easily stain the porous concrete. Different sealants have different qualities.

For instance, while epoxy sealers will stain yellow in sunlight, virgin or pure acrylic sealant won’t. Solvent-based sealers tend to be higher quality and do a good job enhancing the colors of the concrete. High-gloss sealers tend to be slippery, and block in moisture, which can cause cracking or fogging.

As a rule of thumb, look for sealants that have a chemical protective barrier to oil, as oil stains concrete, and also protects against freeze-thaw conditions. Also be sure to choose a sealant that will not yellow, enhances the color of the concrete, is breathable, and is not slippery.

In terms of costs, an acrylic spray-on cure and seal costs about $0.53 per square foot. Two applications of a nonmetallic color and concrete hardener cost approximately $2.50 per square foot.

Sealant should e applied in thin coats with a roller or sprayer, in order to let moisture escape and allow for the natural expansion of the concrete. Each sealing should last between one to three years.

Cost of Pouring a Concrete Patio vs Building a Deck

Typical Cost To Build a new Deck Average: $3,560 - $5,120
See costs in your area

The cost of pouring a concrete patio is often less than the cost of building a deck.

A wooden deck often costs between $15 and $40 per square foot. The high price of wooden decks comes from the amount of labor required: building the frame and boards is labor intensive.

Other factors increase the cost of wooden decks, including the materials chosen, such as hardwood, composite, or pressure treated. If a wooden deck has detailed designs or other features, the cost will be even higher.

You can use our Deck Cost Calculator to estimate the cost of building a deck using various materials.

A basic concrete patio costs much less per square foot, and you may be able install a high-end concrete patio for the price of a mid-range or basic wooden deck. For the same price or less, concrete patios can be designed in unique ways and even mimic the look of wooden decks.

Cost Of Concrete Patio vs Pavers

Typical Cost To Install a Concrete Patio Average: $1,700 - $3,160
See costs in your area

Concrete pavers are individual concrete bricks that come in a variety of colors and designs. Concrete pavers tend to cost between $9 and $20 per square foot, with much of the price coming from labor costs, as pavers are a labor-intensive material to work with.

Concrete pavers last between twenty years and fifty years and repairing cracks is easy because only the cracked slabs have to be replaced, not the whole patio.

As a rule of thumb concrete pavers will cost more than poured concrete, because of the high cost of labor.

However, once you start getting more complex poured concrete patio designs like stamping and coloring, the prices between poured concrete patios and pavers are more similar.

Stamped Concrete Patio vs Other Paving Options

Below is a comparison of stamped concrete patios to other paving options. While concrete falls in the mid-range of patio material costs, it ranks well in terms of maintenance, longevity, and design and customization.

Stamped Concrete Stone Asphalt Precast Pavers

Hiring a professional to install a concrete patio invariably costs more than doing it yourself: you can save between $5 to $10 per square foot of patio by installing it yourself.

However, unless you have experience pouring and mixing concrete it is recommended to hire a professional, because installing a concrete patio can be tricky and can easily go wrong. For instance, if installed incorrectly, the surface of the patio could crack.

Talk to local contractors with experience installing concrete patios and compare price quotes in order to find the best contractor for you.

Concrete Patio Advantages

Concrete patios have many advantages to homeowners. One of the primary benefits is superior durability. Concrete is a long-lasting building material that can withstand a wide variety of weather conditions.

Particularly in colder climates, contractors take special measures to ensure concrete’s durability in cold and snowy conditions, like adding steel reinforcements or wire mesh to prevent cracking.

Concrete patios are also incredibly versatile. Concrete can be molded into many different shapes and designs, ensuring the uniqueness of each and every concrete patio.

Concrete also has almost infinite hues and colors it can hold, and can have stamped patters, engraving, stenciling, and more. It can be designed to match the natural landscape, or mimic other materials such as stone or wood, or add stylistic elements to the outdoor living space.

A concrete patio is also easy to maintain, unlike other materials such as wood and stone. While paving stone, for instance, has joint units from which weeds can sprout, a concrete patio is a single surface so nothing can grow within it.

Unlike wood, which has to be resealed regularly to prevent infestations or rot, concrete does not require any of that labor.

In addition to making your life easier, a concrete patio is also great for the environment compared to other common materials.

Concrete saves lumber and doesn’t require regular sealing with solvents that wood requires, which can harm the environment.

Overall, installing a concrete patio can boost your home value.
